Guide
Link building without the guesswork
The useful question is not "how do I get backlinks" but "how many, from where, to rank for this keyword". Here's how to answer it.

Set a target from the pages above you
Look at the referring domain counts of the pages currently outranking you — not the domains, the pages. Your target is enough quality domains to sit comfortably in that range, which is often a single-digit or low double-digit number.
Judge link quality on three things
- —Topical relevance to your page.
- —Whether the linking page has traffic of its own.
- —Whether the link is editorially placed rather than paid or sitewide.
Tactics that work for small sites
- —Digital PR: original data, surveys or a strong opinion journalists can cite.
- —Resource page outreach: find pages that list tools or guides in your niche.
- —Broken link building: replace dead links with your equivalent resource.
- —Genuine partnerships, suppliers, associations and local sponsorships.
- —Guest contributions on sites that already have real readers.
What to avoid
Bulk link packages, private blog networks and sitewide footer links create risk without durable benefit. If a vendor guarantees a specific number of links at a specific authority for a low price, treat that as a warning sign.
Track the right metric
Count referring domains gained per target page, not total links. Ten links from one site is one vote; ten links from ten relevant sites is ten.
Be patient with attribution
Link-driven ranking changes typically appear over three to six months. Keep building while you work on content so the two compound.
Frequently asked questions
How many backlinks do I need to rank?
It depends entirely on the keyword. Compare the referring domain counts of the ranking pages and target that range.
Should I buy backlinks?
We don't recommend it. Paid link schemes carry penalty risk and the links usually lose value quickly.
Do nofollow links help?
They can bring traffic and brand signals, but plan your authority targets around followed editorial links.
