Guide
Keyword research that produces rankings, not spreadsheets
Volume is the least useful number in keyword research. This guide covers how to find terms you can win and turn them into a publishing order.

Build a seed list from how customers speak
Start with the words your customers use: support tickets, sales calls, review text, competitor navigation labels. Those phrases convert better than anything a tool invents.
Classify intent before anything else
- —Informational — how to, what is, guides.
- —Commercial — best, review, comparison, alternatives.
- —Transactional — buy, price, near me, discount.
- —Navigational — brand and product names.
Read difficulty relative to your own site
A difficulty score of 40 is easy for an established site and impossible for a new one. Always compare the authority of the pages currently ranking with your own, rather than treating the score as absolute.
Prioritise with a simple value calculation
Rank candidates by realistic traffic multiplied by commercial value, divided by effort. A 200-search transactional term usually beats a 5,000-search informational one for a small business.
Group keywords into pages, not posts
Multiple close variants belong on one page. Cluster by intent and by which results Google already shows for each term — if the same pages rank for two keywords, they are one page.
Turn the list into a publishing order
Sequence by winnability: quick wins first to build momentum and internal linking equity, then the harder commercial terms once your site has proof it can rank.
Frequently asked questions
How many keywords should a page target?
One primary keyword plus its close variants. Split anything with a different intent onto its own page.
Are long-tail keywords still worth it?
Yes — they are usually the only realistic entry point for newer sites, and they convert well.
Is search volume unreliable?
It's an estimate, useful for comparison rather than forecasting. Treat it as a relative signal.
